It's been ages since I've used 1.x, but I did have a similar problem in
2.0.12 that was corrected by an errant setting in a newsgroup account. I
probably mis-clicked something, but the crux is Mail & Newsgroups would
pop up, with no alert. After an hour or so I noticed I had somehow
copied a newsgroup into a new folder and Mail & Newsgroups was trying to
authenticate for the newsgroup but couldn't because it was in an account
that had not been configured.
Could you have a similar situation - an email in the Outbox that is
trying to send but can't? An account with a bad setting?
