Some Web sites contrive their login pages to block you from saving your
user ID and password. Generally, you can defeat that blocking by using
the method at <http://cybernetnews.com/firefox-remember-passwords/>.
However, some sites will still block.

Bug #425145 at <https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=425145>
requests that should have a built-in option to defeat the blocking of
the saving of user IDs and passwords. This RFE (request for
enhancement) appears held up by a debate over which has a higher
priority: the intent of Web developers or the wishes of users.

Also see bug #355063 at
<https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=355063>. This notes that
some Web sites perform login operations via scripts; in that case, the
Password Manager cannot remember user IDs and passwords. This is
becoming more and more common an implementation. For a workaround on
some such sites, I use a PrefBar checkbox to disable JavaScript
temporarily while logging-in.
