Does SM use windows update services?

Any other services?

No. It uses an in-app update ping, and downloads updates in the
background, then allowing you to apply the downloaded update.

That is all with the default settings; which also Matches what Firefox
does with regard to updates.

...funny...even though I have my Pref set to allow SM to check for
updates daily, I've never once had it download and install one
automatically nor have I ever seem SM tell me one was available - I've
always updated SM manually after having been alerted to updates by other
websites or here.

Using the Mac 2.0.12 version on all my machines now.

When we announce an update here, it has frequently been the same day as the update "snippets" go live, so a check for updates won't catch it instantly.

The check will happen at most once per day (if that is your setting) and SeaMonkey must be running to check, and iirc does it on idle network time (e.g. if you have lots of pages loading it won't do it during that moment).

Once it checks, and finds an update, it will begin downloading it, with a lower than "webpage load" priority, so your primary browsing is unaffected.

Once the update is ready (fully downloaded) then the app notifies you that an update is ready [if prefs are set that way]. You can then manually restart (apply update), or just let it apply on your next launch of SeaMonkey. If you never close (e.g. uptime > 2 months or something) you won't get the update applied, as it currently cannot update while running.

Long story short, if you read the NG's regularly you'll likely get the announcement before the automatic update. Otherwise it could be some change in configuration settings on your end that changed the above. But I hope that qualifies as enough information vs what you were looking for.
