I am logging changes to my Windows registry and to the files on my
C-drive. I don't want my clock to synchronize to external time servers,
my E-mail client to download messages, etc, all of which would introduce
extraneous changes to the log.

I generally download software from sources that I trust. If I download
from a new source, I check the downloaded file with TWO different
anti-virus applications, after updating their virus databases.

On occasion, I might filter and ignore all newsgroup messages
posted through GoogleGroups via Google's G2/1.0 user agent
because of spam from that source.
