Probably, or the existing one needs to apply in all cases. <http://kb.mozillazine.org/Date_display_format> lists mail.ui.display.dateformat.today which can be set to 2, but that currently only seems to have an effect on the thread pane but neither the header pane nor the print preview (which AFAIK uses the same code as the header pane).
Maybe Karsten can add something to Mnenhy, which is already tweaking that area. ;-)
