On restarting Seamonkey a few minutes ago, I was informed
that it was installing my updates, then checking my plug-ins
for compatibility, then asked if I wanted it to be my
default client for e-mail, and finally launched.

All looked promising, but rather displeased that it had
migrated itself from 2.2 to 2.3 without my explicit
permission, I immediately opened

        Edit/Preferences/Privacy& Security

to try to identify the box to uncheck in order to disable
"update without explicit permission".

What I found instead was that the dialogue box was
not fully visible (see screenshot) --

whatever is intended to appear below "Saved Password"
is cut off by the lower edge of the dialogue box.

Surely dialogue boxes should check how big they
will need to be before presenting themselves to
a user ?

You did try stretching the boxes?
Just checking, so I don't make the wrong assumption.

P.S. I have now located the appropriate preference,
which turns out to be under

        Edit/Preferences/Advanced/Software Install... (another truncated field)

but it does not offer me the behaviour I would prefer :
download automatically, but install only after asking
permission.

:-) :-) <sarcasm on:
But why would anybody ever want that?
        :off sarcasm> :-) :-)
