I was astonished to read Justin's statement that compacting folders
could take as long as an hour. In my experience, it's never taken more
than about five minutes, and it usually takes less than two. And I'm not
working with some ultrafast multi-CPU machine, but I do have folders
with thousands of messages.

In one account, a while ago, I had over 40k mails (many due to innordinate spam, and never really caring to actually filter it). Lets just say, that I had deleted a good number of spam (or moved it in some cases, if I found it humorous in the first place), as well as being subscribed to many mailing lists, that I also had filters set to move to different folders.

Lets just say that my compacting took about 49 minutes. It also wasn't the fastest HD/CPU at the time, but that was an extreme case.
