Memorandum
For: SeaMonkey Developers
Subject: Upgrade to V. 2.3.1

History:
I have been a loyal user of the Suite applications since Netscape Communicator 4.01. I have made many upgrades and transitions from the older version to the newer versions. Most of the time they went smoothly, the one exception was between Mozilla 1.8 to SeaMonkey 2.0. After spending several hours and days recovering lost files, messages, and bookmarks I waited for many updates in the SeaMonkey experimental tree before trying a new upgrade to 2.3.1.

Process:
Normally in previous versions it had been stated that the process of uninstalling a previous version was not required before installing an upgrade, however I found a few occasions where the new upgrade did not perform as expected. Uninstalling all versions of the Suite and then installing the latest upgrade did resolve the problems. In view of the recent number of user problems reported in this newsgroup I went back to my older method of upgrading the SeaMonkey Suite by firs downloading the installer file, uninstalling the previous version (2.0), rebooting my Win XP SP-3 computer, and then installing the most recent SeaMonkey version (2.3.1).

Result:
SeaMonkey (2.3.1) installed without any noticeable problems. The Bookmarks, Address Book, History, and all mail accounts were available as soon as launched.
Missing Tools:
Almost all the familiar tools I used on a daily basis are missing because they are not compatible with this newer version of SeaMonkey. Most notably the “Google Search Bar” is missing, but still available with Internet Explorer. When I need to perform research and development on the Web I can still open Internet Explorer and perform the research I need for a project.

Overall Impression:
This newer version if SeaMonkey (2.1.3) is faster and better at rendering web sites than earlier versions. It still performs very well on secure sites like my bank accounts and Cell Phone Accounts site. One major improvement I have seen is the ability to open and play the Pogo.com games. On SM 2.0 SM would crash every time I loaded a game, this always happened while loading a game, but after several tries it would load the game and I could play the games. Note: SM 1.8 on my laptop did not crash and Internet Explorer on my desktop did not crash. (A bug report was filed, but no indication of a fix was ever received). Overall this new version performs much better than earlier versions and this is what you all have been striving for, good job. I am very pleased with this new upgrade and look forward to the updates for the Add-Ons like themes and extensions.

Future Outlook:
Now that SM 2.x is a stable release is there a way you can reassure Ad-On developers that their upgraded tools, extensions, themes, and plugins will remain compatible for the long haul (several years)?

Good job guys and gals for all the work in developing this very handy tool for the web and mail.
Sincerely,

Michael Gordon
