Warning I have not tried this, but it should be the same in SeaMonkey. Use
about:config and change the default sort order
values from 1 (ascending) to 2 (descending).
mailnews.default_news_sort_order 2

Thank you!!! That fixed it for newsgroups. But I can't find a similar setting in about:config for email. So, email still
reverts. I can't understand why ascending would be default. Why make more work for yourself having to scroll to the bottom
of the page every time you check your newsgroups or email? Descending should be default I think.
