On that issue, I've been using Linux for about seven years and have never once compiled a single ... anything. I'm not sure why you think that the mainstream Linuxes still require one to do that. There's around 25,000 applications in my Ubuntu repository. Click and install; no compiling of anything. And about the command line? Most average users will never need to use it or see it. As you mention, geeks might.
To "create" my OS, I merely downloaded an .iso file, burned it to CD, and then booted from the CD. Pretty much like one does with a Windows CD or DVD.
