SM 2.7.2
From time to time I would find, among other message headers on this
group. a listing for one with no subject but a date of 12/31/69 at 7:00
p.m., marked read. Recently I began to get two of these, and now today I
got three of them, including one marked unread. When I clicked the
"star" to mark it read, a few of the other headers also were then marked
read, although they weren't. No, I've never tried to open one.

Your date and time sounds like Unix epoch time of 00:00:00 UTC on 1
January 1970 - adjusted for someone's time zone (5 hours west of UTC).

You should open them and see what they say. I'll bet they are just
ordinary messages where the sender's Unix/Linux computer's time is not
set.

O.K., tried opening them. Page was blank, and "View Source" was also blank.

Played a bit with Character Encoding (error?), and received the message "newsgroup server responded:no such article in group". Clicked on a link "Delete all expired messages" (another error?).

So, there I was. I could see all headers, but clicking on any message produced a blank page. So, all message content was gone (in News, but not in Mail which was o.k.). Emptied trash and compacted, with no change. Trying to compose this message using "Reply" produced a message form but without the "To" filled out as expected.

Deleted the newsgroup, reinstalled everything, message content now available, and I am replying in normal fashion.

What did I do? Could I have fixed it? All help eagerly accepted and appreciated!

Larry
