It *does* insert a new line with the selected text on my SM 16.a1.

I never use HTML, but playing a little with your example: how about
CTRL-A to select all followed by Insert->HTML?

You get a new window with the selected text including the HTML code and
you can edit there. Before pressing 'Insert' you have to delete the text
in the editor window. Can be done be selecting it and then execute Edit->Cut

Tedious, but 'in der Not frisst der Teufel Fliegen'. *g*
