XP is getting more and more annoying all the time, anyway. I have this feeling that the security patches MS released over the last couple years have not received any consideration regarding performance impact; if it works, it's fine for them, even if the patch causes serious performance problems. Case in point: Microsoft Update nowadays uses oodles of RAM for about 20 minutes right after XP boots up... the machine is basically unusable for the first half-hour in the morning. The only known cure is to disable Microsoft Update and go back to Windows Update.
Well, I'm not running WinXP anymore, but there /is/ a reasonable alternative: don't shut down every night. Run the machine continuously, let it update at 3 AM while you're sleeping. Yes, there's a performance hit, but who cares if you're fast asleep until it's over?
