winmail.dat is a Microsoft artifact, meaningful only to Microsoft E-mail
applications. It tells the application how to display a message that
was composed in rich-text-format (RTF). Few or none of non-Microsoft
applications use winmail.dat.
on windows there is a "winmail opener" utility that can view it
