Subject: Re: Lost Seamonkey data
Ver: SeaMonkey 2.14.1
OS: Win 7 (64)

I started SeaMonkey today and everything had vanished, files,
folders, mail, bookmarks, everything.

I copied my backup copy of SeaMonkey, back into the original
location; C:\Users\JB\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\SeaMonkey

This has made no difference. Kinda makes backup useless, have
I done something wrong? How can I get the data back again?
Goto Tools -> Switch profile and check if you have not inadvertently
created a new profile or changed the profile location.

There's only one profile showing, i.e. Default.
Can someone tell me the names of the files which should appear
in the SeaMonkey folder for SM to function properly please? jb
jb, the main ones that you would be interested in are Inbox and Sent
which contain your received e-mails and sent e-mails. Note that there
are also index files, e.g. Inbox.msf and Sent.msf, associated with both
these files. Don't worry about these, as they are re-created when needed.

Also, the file abook.mab contains your e-mail addresses.

Try doing a Windows Find Files/Folders for these files, to see if they
are still about.

Note that Windows is normally set to hide files/folder more than, I
think, two levels down, so you may need to turn this "Hide" function
off, via Tools or Options or something in your Windows Explorer, I think!
I'm really struggling to understand this. My problem is that
all seamonkey browser/mail files suddenly disappeared and SM
became inoperable.
I had a backup of the seamonkey file and copied it back to it's
original location but this did nothing to restore SM.
Doing searches, it seems I have the necessary files on the HD.
My problem is this, restoring the backup of SM doesn't work. How
then do I restore it? Do I find each file and copy it to it's
proper place, and how do I know what IS the proper place? Is
there something about backup and restore that I'm missing. It's
not at all clear. Does anyone know how this can be achieved please?
O.K., jb, hopefully the files that you found are, indeed, your missing
Profile files.

Safety first, jb, make a copy of the files that you've found....just in
case!!

Just for future reference, jb, if you did a normal installation of
SeaMonkey, the program was installed to one part of your hard-drive, and
your profile (the part that contains your e-mails and your website
addressbook) are located in a separate location. Re-installing
SeaMonkey, hopefully, did not write a blank profile over your required
files. What we need to do is to tell the program files where to look for
these profile files!

So, when you located your sent or inbox file, they might have been in a
location such as *C:\Documents and Settings\SeaMonkey\Profile\Mail\Sent*
and *C:\Documents and Settings\SeaMonkey\Profile\Mail\Inbox* and your
website address book might be in *C:\Documents and
Settings\SeaMonkey\Profile\places.sqlite*.

What you need to do is point SeaMonkey to the directory/folder level
above these locations, i.e. *C:\Documents and
Settings\SeaMonkey\Profile*. (Make whatever substitutions required to
point to the real locations on your computer!!) Then start SeaMonkey,
and select Tools->Switch Profiles->Manage Profile->Create Profile, and,
on the second screen, enter a Profile Name, and then on that same
screen, select "Choose Folder", and point it to C:\Documents and
Settings\SeaMonkey\Profile (adjusted as required).

This should then find your lost profile, re-name it to what you entered,
and then you should be, hopefully, up and running again!!

Report back if any problems!!

-- Daniel Happy New Year and may 2013 be better for you than 2012 was!! --------------------------------------------------------- Daniel - many thanks - a couple of queries, Firstly, are you saying that I need only 3 files? i.e. sent*, Inbox* and places.sqlite* ? If I need others, what are they? Then, in pointing SeaMonkey to these files, where exactly do I put that instruction, is it in the profiles.ini file where it says "Path=Profiles" etc., etc.? (Example)
Path=*C:\Documents and Settings\SeaMonkey\Profile

Then if that example was correct, (actually it's Profiles with an 's' on
my pc) presumably I must be sure all these files are copied into
that Profile (or Profiles) folder?

Apologies, if my neophyte status irritates!
