Selecting that option and setting a long delay - for example, 30 seconds
- makes no difference. Every retrieved message is immediately treated as
read and hence indistinguishable from other messages except when
applying a display filter (like "Recent Mail".

Check your filters.  You might have created a filter that applies to all
messages and that marks them as read.
