No, it is not "just as effective." Some parts of the profile information
will certainly be lost in a direct upgrade. Due to various technical
reasons, some features of the import profile wizard dealing with
old-style profiles were removed over the years.

Will the remaining information be enough for you? I don't know; I
haven't ever attempted to do it that way. You may have a workable system
missing some stuff you don't deem really important, or you may end up
with a broken profile.

The *safer* route is to do a step-by-step upgrade as indicated by
Daniel. But, just to be sure, you should backup your profile before
starting.
