Hi Philip, et al

Thank you all for trying to sort out our problem which has yet to find a solution that works for us here. SM became problematic on embedded sounds starting with version 2.1.x and remains so here, as noted. Oddly enough, the problem does not exist IE 8, whereas in earlier versions of IE the dual <embed> and <bgsound> script were required.

In any case, I'm giving up on embedded MIDI files for our site, and will try to switch to MP3 on the same themes where possible. I've already made the switch on the two pages on our site that were singled out - http://www.istrianet.org/istria/index.html and http://www.istrianet.org/istria/illustri/tartini/biography.htm.

Unfortunately, we don't have a list of those pages since various and sundry people contributed to different parts of the site over the past 15 years that it has been on the net. Is there a simple way for me to do a search of internal script on our web site to find the embedded sound scripts? I'm afraid I don't know of any.

In any case, browser independence sounds really good. Unfortunately, I
did a quick search for the "HTML 5 <audio> element" you mentioned, and
see that it does not work with MIDI or WAV sound files. Any other
suggestions?
Short of converting your existing WAV files to one of the supported
formats (MP3 and OGG), I am afraid not. MIDI is a completely
different kiddle of fish, and I have never had the need to embed
MIDI in a web page, so can offer no suggestions.
You must be a professional programmer (who never contributed to our pages, sadly), or else too young to remember. :-D

I have no problem converting WAV to MP3 (and have no use for OGG), but I see that even with embedding those audio files the control bar must be visible. Aren't WAV and MPS actually related formats? I will also have a closer look at the other suggested alternatives.
I am sending
under separate cover a link to an HTML 5 <audio> demonstration
page, with which you may enjoy experimenting.
I seem not to have received your separate email, or else your link may have gotten lost in the big shuffle of quoting everyone above the new text. Would you please give it again?

Thanks again,

Marisa
