This just started with the 2.20 update.
According to the release notes (which you should see the first time you
launch the browser after an upgrade), there are new notification options
at Edit | Preferences | Mail & Newsgroups | Notifications.
So adjust the settings to what you like.
I don't see a "notifications" line in SM 2.20
