I've noticed this behaviour in SM 2.20 on OS X. When I first open the browser, I usually -- but not always -- get notification of how many messages are being downloaded. After the initial download, I no longer see any notifications in the status bar. The only information comes from the XUL alerts. This, I think, is likely a bug.
