As for the name being poor, I don't think so. "Status bar" has
historically been that term and used for said purpose in windowed,
graphical user interfaces for going on 30 years now. It is traditionally
used to give non-modal status updates on the state/function of the
program. It's not unique to Mozilla and the organization's use and
placement of the bar is consistent with user experience expectations.
IMO, YMMV and all.
