Thanks for the question and to Jim T for the answer.
I find those previews a total pain in the rear end - you move the mouse
to some place near the edge of the screen and all sorts of images turn
up shouting ME!, ME!, I'M IMPORTANT!, obscuring what I really wanted to
click on.
This setting turns one of those off. Not the worst by a long way but it
is one.
btw, that setting does not exist for Linux. Nor does the problem though.
