The problem with avoiding tabs in MailNews is, that you have to check
'[x] Hide the tab when only one tab is open'. This affects also the
browser where i would like unchecking.
For me this is better:

Thanks for that suggestion, Hartmut, but then I'd have to remember to
disable/remove this when SM starts running M & N as a tab of the
browser, wouldn't I?? ;-) (although it does state "tabmail", so maybe it
will be ignored in browser!!)
