It still works. In plain text you type Colon,dash,right parentheses smile semicolon in place of the parentheses makes a smirk or crooked grin. And so on

Long ancient history ago the was a a plugin or extension Phil Chee put that used through another extensions what would put Graphic type smileys in Text emails. They always has graphically Smiley's in HTML Mail.
