Actually, both messages contain these fields, with different values. I sent a message from one of my accounts to another, and found:

The copy in my Sent folder had:
X-Mozilla-Status: 0001
X-Mozilla-Status2: 00800000

The copy received in the other account had:
X-Mozilla-Status: 0001
X-Mozilla-Status2: 00000000

Of course, I could change the first value for each by toggling read/unread (pressing "M").
