When viewing the thread pane it would be nice to see what the Next Item

What happens is that the current item is at the bottom of the display.

You can reverse the order of messages by time from View > Sort By >
Descending.

How would this fix Rick's problem??

It seems to me that Rick wants things set up so that if he presses "N" to go to
the Next unread message, he doesn't want the
selected/displayed message Subject to be at the bottom of the Threads Pane, but
that there should be at least one read/unread
message Subject to be showing in the Threads Pane (Why?? I don't know!!)

Daniel, thanks for the support and grins! In many cases of 'navigation' it is
helpful to see context both behind and ahead.
For example, if you can see that the next item in your email is spam or from a friend or a newsletter your expectation changes accordingly and you have that second to prepare.

What you and Beauregard are suggesting doesn't achieve this, because you might
have the situation where the last message in a
thread is the only unread message in that thread, and the next unread message
(in another thread) would not be shown in the
Thread Pane. If you then press "N", the next unread message would be brought up
to the bottom line of the Thread Pane. This
is what Rick is trying to stop, as you then have no idea if the next message in
the thread (which, in your suggestion, could
actually be the message before the "current" Unread message) has been read or
not, as it is not showing in the Threads Pane
at that time!!
