Jean, you should be able to create an appropriately named pref in the about:config screen, but I've forgotten how.

A second way to do it would be to create yourself a plain text file (i.e. notepad/wordpad/similar) called userpref.js and save it to the same location as your prefs.js file. in that file just put network.protocol-handler.external.mailto,user set,boolean,false and save the file.

The next time you completely close SM and then re-start it, this new pref should be written into your prefs.js file and then appear in about:config.
