I have seen this previously, but not lately, on both Windows 7 and my
older XP boxes. Although a new computer may give different results, I
doubt that what you are experiencing is related to hardware or the OS
but rather some background process checking something. I wonder if it
stops when the network (wired & Wifi both) and any other messaging
applications are disabled and you run in "off-line" mode? Mapped
network drives to unavailable servers are also general performance killers.
