For newsgroups, try this:
<snews://news.mozilla.org/mozilla.dev.apps.seamonkey>
Last time I looked that worked. You do need to specify the server, not
just the group, in the same way that you need to specify the domain of
an email address, not just the prefix. And the slashes after "news:"; are
just as necessary as they are after "http:" and other protocols.
