Basically the xpi is a zip file. you can rename it to xxx.zip, open it with your prefered zip manager and extract the file: install.rdf. You must open it with an editor (notepad, gvim, ..) You need to retrieve and change the line starting with "<em:maxversion>" and set it to <em:maxversion>2.*</em:maxversion> reimport the file in the zip and rename it xpi.
