THanks!! Chicago Wolf, for telling me about TCPOptimiser..... .i downloaded it 
from www.softpedia.com ...... i hesitated about the choices but then i let it 
go ahead and 'optimise' a whole lot of settings ... Before, the 'status' 
reported that the dial-up was 24.6 kbps. After optimising, ie 5mins later, it 
was 37kbps ...... not really a scientific test, it always varied between these 
numbers, and i only use the connection for a few mins 1 or 2 times a day ..... 
since then, it has ways been nearer the high-end of the range ... so i do 
believe the TCPOptimiser has made an improvement... thanks, jake williams
