Right-click on mail folder "Properties > Repair Folder"
Would that explain CPU Spin when reading a message ?
Did see where you said that you have compacted folders, if you haven't the data is still there and must be parsed even thought "deleted".
My profile has a long legacy from NN 4.x and I have ~4GB data in my mail folders and do not have your issue...just saying.
