If I hold Ctrl on the keyboard while clicking Reload, it opens the page
again in a new tab. If I just click Reload (without holding Ctrl) it
reloads in the current tab.
Shift+Reload does a more forceful reload (fetches from server without
using the cache). Perhaps you're holding Ctrl instead of Shift?
(In Internet Explorer, I think it is Ctrl+Reload to ignore the cache)
