In trying to update a copy of SM v.2.30 to the latest version on a
Win7Home Premium PC, the update fails and an error message is returned
claiming a 2nd version of SM is running. After a file-by-file search
using Windows Explorer, I couldn't find any evidence of a 2nd copy
of SM
but I wasn't clear about what evidence I should have been looking for.

What is the best way to deal with this problem that won't cause me to
lose any of the existing profile data (bookmarks, mail files, etc.)and
other customization?

Thanks, in advance, for suggestions, pointers to tutorial material, and
advice.

Just a hunch. Look in your profile for a file named "parent.lock".
Delete that file and try the install once again.

Interesting idea. I tried deleting 'parent.lock' but it didn't fix the
problem.

In the process of locating the 'parent.lock' file I did notice that I
have both a 'prefs' file and a 'prefs-1' file. Could this mean anything
given the problem I am having?

Just a stab in the dark ... close SM. Rename prefs.js and prefs-1.js to
prefs.js.bak and prefs-1.js.bak.

Try the update.

Also, do you have more than one profile?

Thanks for the suggestion. In the browser mode, nothing changed after renaming the 'prefs' and 'prefs-1' files as you suggested. After doing this, the update still wouldn't load despite several system re-boots. In the e-mail mode, I was prompted to establish a new e-mail account, something I didn't do as I want to keep the existing profile, e-mail files, bookmarks, etc.

This PC has two user accounts, each with their own passwords and both set up as 'administrator' accounts. Each user has their own SM profile and SM password.

User 1's SM account has always worked fine and does not have an e-mail account. User 2's SM account has e-mail set up and is the one with the problem.
