Samuel, somewhere here-abouts (actually in the part of this response that I've snipped!), tonight, I've read that popstate files are used to list e-mails that are left on a pop email server. Do you download your e-mail *and* also leave them on the pop server, maybe so that you can read them on another computer, as well??

Check your Edit->Mail & Newsgroups Account Settings, select "Server Settings" for your e-mail account to see if you have selected "Leave messages on server" in the Server Settings section.
