My guess would be perhaps the history file was also corrupted. I think

That's it.

I decided to bite the bullet and rebuild my profile, and in the new profile, I'm having the same problem, probably that I copied places.sqlite from the old profile. In the new profile, I renamed that file, and when I restarted Seamonkey, the problem seems to have gone away.

I'm doing a fairly extensive check of all features and preferences (and it's a fairly extensive job), to make sure I have everything going the way that I want them. I've got the browser pretty much finished, and most of my mail, news and RSS accounts done, although I still have to get address books and LDAP configs done.

I'm already noticing a little faster response in browsing, as well as several points of annoyance that are gone.

However, there's still some amounts of fine-tuning of preferences (including extensions that will take some time). Given the age of my profile, I think the work is worth it, to have a complex profile that's not encumbered by a decade-plus of accumulated crud.

Thus, for a couple of days, I suspect that I'll be going back and forth between the new and old profiles, where I don't really do anything in the old profile except verify configuration settings.
