It could very likely be a buggy JavaScript script.  NOTE WELL:
JavaScript is NOT the same as Java.

I have the PrefBar extension installed with both the "Javascript (Tab)"
checkbox and the "Javascript" checkbox enabled.  The "Javascript (Tab)"
checkbox applies only to the current tab during tabbed browsing.  The
"Javascript" checkbox -- which I renamed "Overall JavaScript" applies to
the entire browser session.  These make it easy for me to stop scripts
from running.
