Using SeaMonkey 2.26.1 under WinXP Pro SP3
[Yep both obsolete but to Debian when ??? ;]

I'm having a problem with some, *NOT* all news folders.
[No similar problem with email.]

My habit when accessing a USENET group for the first time is download all headers available on the server. I then mark all messages prior to an arbitrary date as read. Then mark messages of uninteresting threads as read. This allows me a personally optimal tradeoff of local disk space and perhaps needing a very old message.

Works fine in general.
After reading a message that may be of short term interest I'll reset the status to unread. If an old message is referenced in a new thread, I can easily go back and read that old message to the limit inherent to the server.

The net result is that the column labeled "Unread" indicates the total of brand new messages and those I've noted as being of short term interest. If there there are any never read messages, that is indicated by the green down arrow adjacent to the newsgroup title.

The occasional annoyance is that the green arrow may be displayed when *ALL* messages have been read. The simplistic remedy is delete the relevant msf and let SM rebuild it.

The *PROBLEM* is that occasionally SM will show an erroneous "unread" status for many, but not all, previously read messages.

Why?
Do I have any choice but to manually mark old messages appropriately?

Comments?
TIA
