Whoops again!  I'm an idiot.  Apparently font smoothing is already 
turned on, as I turned it off, and things got even worse!  Maybe I need 
a new monitor or something.  But I still cannot figure out why the fonts 
look relatively smooth and nice in some programs and not in others.
