It's not just you.  There is a trend for bloated nonsense in the
software world.

There are several factors:

* Web sites are more bloated than ever.  Consider all the JavaScript,
  the large images, and buzzwords like "responsive design".  All of
  these require resources.
* The backend (Gecko) is also bigger.  Every year, new standards are
  published, and web browsers rush to implement them.
* Corollary: in the mad rush to implement features, things get hacked
  together without much thought/testing and quality suffers.  (I'm not
  knocking SeaMonkey or Mozilla developers in particular.  This problem
  affects the wider software community.)

Is there a fix to stop the cycle?  I don't know.
