No.  How do you know what program is being used to send them?
It could be 10 line piece of cmd code.  Telnet>smtp or swaks.

is there an easy way to distinguish that?

Maybe, maybe not.
Compare headers to a known valid email from the friend.
Could be your friend's comp is a bot or zombie.
