Comfort. I started on Netscape around 1995 and got used to it - this is the logical progression. FireFox user interface doesn't work for me, it is awkward and not comfortable - too "modern" and lacking features I use. Chrome is a serious privacy breach. I don't want Google to have access to everything I do. I like the way SM is set up. I also like E-mail and Web integrated. It is what I know and after 20 years of use is very comfortable.
That said I agree SM is dated and there doesn't seem to be a big enough team on it anymore to keep it up to date and current. I had to admit that my dear Eudora e-mail client was dead a while back and I know the time is near here as well. Waiting for this "2.48" for now to see what happens. I'm not ready to switch yet.
