As I recall, Seamonkey is built on the ESR version of Firefox? I hope that means I will still be able to access Java applets when the new version finally rolls around...

No, SeaMonkey is built on the Mainstream version of Firefox.

The next version should be 2.48, with 2.49 being switched to ESR, to match Firefox 52 ESR as Frank-Rainer mentions in his post.

Might also be a 2.49 which switches it over.

The next version after that should be 2.56. ❓

If there is one and not everything including Mozilla crashed and burned which is more likely now it will probably be 2.59. There are discussions to jump the minor version number so that it matches the Gecko and TB one.

I'm curious to see how they are going to do version numbering. Will the version that should match Firefox 52.1.0, be 2.1.49, or 2.49.1, or ❓❓

ESR tree was already there last week so I applied some missing patches and built myself a 2.49.1 for Windows from the esr tree :) The official version will be 2.49.something for sure.
