The current "patch" is just a flipped pref which you can flip yourself in about:config

Set network.IDN_show_punycode to true.
Other than setting this as the default I do not know how this could be fixed differently by anyone. Maybe putting an icon or something in the status bar. Firefox will likely add another doorhanger because they got rid of the status bar and now clutter the location bar to make it finally unusable...
