I figured this one out today. I had tried Thunderbird some time ago, and had not had such problems, so I looked at tbird's preferences - it was using port 465 for SMTP upload, not 587 (that I had in my notes, probably from some prior anti-spam "fix", now forgotten). With 465, Seamonkey now it works, and I get the copy to myself as well. I will summarize the correct settings in a notebook - setup data is currently scattered about in prior notes.
