I had AVG until about 2 1/2 years ago. I accidentally clicked on a site that infected my computer. I took it to Micro Center, who cleaned it up. At the tech's suggestion I uninstalled AVG and bought ESET NOD 32. NOD 32 & Malwarebytes have worked well since.
