Do you realize you're replying to a 6 year-old message? By default, SM/TB store messages in the mbox format (one system file per mail "folder") When a message is deleted, for performance reasons, it is only marked as deleted (exactly as some filesystems do). Compacting means rewriting the whole file after actually removing the deleted messages.
