If you right click on the message does the "Watch Thread" context menu
item have a check mark? Uncheck it.

My question was why did it happen in the first place.
The behavior goes back quite a ways - gut feel is several releases.

My OS is Debian 9.1
There is a bug on Linux that if you open the context menu with a right
click with the mouse close to the right edge of the pane, a context menu
item will be enabled.
