Yes 2.53 is still using xpi extensions. As usual because of later js features
and because of some of the backports really old ones may cause problmes.
Binary extensions and plugins other than Flash are no longer supported.
Even 2.57 will support xpi extensions as Thunderbird also still does.
2.48 and 2.49.4 are not 100% compatible either. If you used 2.48 with the
2.49.4 profile you should reset the suite.migration.version in about:config so
that the migration routines run again.

They are incompatible. Don't do this. You probably have a ton of startup
error messages in the 2.49.5 error log now.

2.48 is old before trying 2.53 I will update the 2.48 to 2.49.4 (or 5) :
<https://www.seamonkey-project.org/>
Or un-official 2.49.5 : <http://www.wg9s.com/comm-esr/>
Simply name the location of program with the complete version and run it.
On windows and linux it won't be hard.

Thanks to everyone for the replies. I use to be able to figure things out but
my mind is starting to play tricks on me and my memory is not so keen now
days. Heck I am still using an old flip phone with no texting or data plan.
Does SM 2.53 still use .xpi extensions? My SM 2.48 does not give me any
trouble but thought I should be thinking about something newer. I run a SM
2.49.4 portable version and use the same profile as I use on SM 2.48 (I just
copied my profile into the portable version on a USB drive) and it seems to
work OK but never run them at the same time. Thanks again everyone.
