To your question. Interesting enough that I tried to replicate the
problem. With success. :) I opened the Customize menu by right
clicking
with the mouse on the Menu Bar. Then I dragged the Home button in the
new window. Result: No Home button in the Bookmarks Toolbar anymore.
So, did you look in the Customize menu for the Home button?

What I forgot to say is that there is no "Home" button in the
Customize menu, either. :/
If the "Home" button is not in the "Customise" window, may signify
that the "Home" button is somewhere in a "bar", perhaps not visible,
becaus of the large number of other buttons on this "bar".
What I can say is that in my about:config page I have:
pref.browser.homepage.disable_button.current_group
pref.browser.homepage.disable_button.default_page
both FALSE.

Ray,
You hit the nail on the head. It was in another bar, not visible.
Before I got your answer, I tinkered with "Customize" until it
reappeared (but don't ask me how, it was in the middle of the night).
I was then able to move it back to the Bookmarks bar.
Your added notes on about.config are helpful, too.
